Dockside Diner. When we say Disney hot dog these are the first two words that come to mind, right? Probably not. Every Disneyphile blurts Casey’s Corner when asked where to find a hot dog in Walt Disney World. Does that mean we should ignore all other Disney hot dogs? We went on a mission to try one of the“others” to see how it stands up to the People’s Champion (sorry Dwayne, we’re borrowing you’re taglines again). Our top contender is over at the Dockside Diner, in the Carolina all beef foot-long hot dog. Grab some napkins, we’re definitely going to need them!
The Nostalgia of a Champion
Located at the end of Main Street you’ll find Casey’s Corner. Over the years, Casey’s has become a legend in the Disney hot dog area for both a standard hot dog, and recently the hot dog’s of the month. There is something about walking into Casey’s, ordering a hot dog then heading out to eat it in front the of the castle. Some would say it’s a right of passage for all Disney goers.
Passholder Insights: Casey’s tends to be busiest between 11:45 am and 1:45 pm, the lunch hours of course. If you’re looking to avoid the wait, checkout mobile ordering.
Docked on the edge of Echo Lake in Hollywood Studios, you’ll find the Dockside Diner. A counter service location serving up a select few items like a chili cheese foot-long hot dog, without raw onions. What? That goes against everything us New Englanders know, but we’ll let slide since we’re in Florida. Then rounding out the menu are chili-cheese nachos and a barbecued pulled pork sandwich. But we’re here for the Carolina foot-long that comes with pulled pork and coleslaw.
Dockside Diner is located off to left of the Hollywood Studios park icon, Grauman’s Chinese Theater. After picking up your meal you could either enjoy it at one of the many shaded picnic tables or take with you, as hot dogs are designed to be mobile meal just ask any New Yorker. On this sunny day we decided to grab a seat at one of the picnic tables.
The picnic tables are a great place to recharge during the day, either with or without a snack. If you’re looking for an adult beverage, definitely check out the drink options at Dockside Diner. They’re offering up a variety of refreshing cocktails.
Passholder Insights: Depending on the time of day, you could also enjoy the Star Wars stage show in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theater while you eat and relax.
Time for the first bite. Picking up the hot dog the first thing we noticed was the bun, it was a bit dry and firmer than we expected, but we continued forward. The hot dog had a good snap to it, and was juicy on the inside. It was well spiced too, which helped it stand up to the flavor of the pulled pork. The pork was soft and silky with a tangy tomato based BBQ sauce. The only thing missing was maybe a little spice (personal preference). Bringing everything together was the coleslaw. It was cool and creamy countering perfectly with the richness of the pulled pork and tanginess of the barbecue sauce.
Looking back, we realized that the bun was well thought out. The firmness of the bun held up really well to all the barbecue sauce and coleslaw. It never got soggy.
It was a hard fought battle. Dockside Diner waged a great contender in the Carolina foot-long, but in the end, nostalgia wins out. You can’t beat the views of the castle and the smell of fresh made waffle cones coming from the ice cream parlor across Main Street. It’s Americana at its best!
We would definitely recommend the Carolina foot-long if you’re at Hollywood Studios. It was a worthy stand in until you get to Casey’s again. Depending on how hungry you are, it’s a hot dog that’s easily splittable. Next time you’re in Hollywood Studios and in the mood for a hot dog don’t overlook this contender. Just remember, it’s a two napkin kind of dog!
