Regardless of your opinion on change, changes are happening right in front of us at Walt Disney World. Hollywood Studios is slowly changing into a park where you’re immersed in the movies (Star Wars and Toy Story Land), and with major recent advancements to both Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom, Epcot is next on the list for dramatic updates. After the recently announcement regarding Illuminations, now we hear about a new Mary Poppins ride coming to the United Kingdom (U.K.) pavilion.
New attractions are always great things! Who doesn’t love a new attraction? Especially when Disney does not remove an existing attraction to build something new. For years Disneyphiles have been begging for an attraction themed around Mary Poppins, I mean, come on, Mary Poppins is a classic! Walt Disney World listened! The new attraction is rumored to be something simple, think Dumbo or Aladdin’s Magic Carpets and the concept is around the merry go round scene in the original movie with Julie Andrews.
The addition of Mary Poppins opens up a bigger question. Is the addition of Intellectual Property (IP) to Epcot’s World Showcase a good thing?
Epcot’s World Showcase opens the door to different countries and gives a glimpse into their unique culture. Originally designed as a way for the individual countries to increase tourism, Disney would coordinate with each of the countries to keep them as authenticate as possible. No detail is too small. For example, the Moroccan government brought in tile workers to lay the tiles within the Morocco pavilion.
But, over the last 5 years we’ve seen a shift occur with the World Showcase. Walt Disney World starting adding different IPs to the country pavilions. It all started with Frozen replacing the Maelstrom boat ride in the Norway pavilion and has extended to the France pavilion with Ratatouille. The addition of IPs continues with Mary Poppins to the U.K. pavilion and the persistent rumors about the addition of Coco to the Mexico pavilion.
The changes are a great thing for Epcot, Walt Disney World, and Disney fans alike for many reasons. First, it means new attractions to experience based around our favorite Disney and Pixar stories. The Frozen ride is truly magical and one of better rides in Epcot.
The World Showcase is one of my favorite areas of Walt Disney World, and you may find your favorite bloggers there most afternoons during their Walt Disney World trips. Currently it may not be for everyone, though, as younger children may not enjoy it. I was not a huge fan when I was a kid, but by bringing in IPs the World Showcase becomes a family affair. It’s brilliant, as Disney is drawing families in with the attractions while immersing them in the country’s culture.
The root of Walt Disney World will always be family. Everything Disney creates brings families together to create magical memorable moments that will last a lifetime. Change is a great thing for the World Showcase, so let’s grab a pint and gear up for some great attractions! We’ll see you around the “world”!
