Reflecting on Illuminations – Epcot’s Nighttime Spectacular

The fireworks at Walt Disney World just don’t stop! By this time next year, a new nighttime spectacular will be arriving at Epcot. Disney recently announced that they are updating Illuminations Reflections of Earth with a brand new concept, currently under development. You can check out the full announcement is here.

Only upstaged by the attractions, the Walt Disney World nighttime spectaculars are something that can be done justice by blogging, one must experience these immersive shows first hand.  All of the parks have a uniquely designed show to reflect each park’s theme and they are all worth an evening crammed shoulder to shoulder with strangers! (Be forewarned they may ruin your future enjoyment of non-Disney firework displays!)

Illuminations from the Japan Pavilion

Let’s take a few moments to reflect – on this show’s illustrious past.  Illuminations Reflections of Earth is a global nighttime spectacular that is performed every night around the World Showcase lagoon. The show started just before the millennium as part of the yearlong celebration. Depending on where you stand, your view and experience is different each time (our recommend spot is the bridge between France and England) for a truly unique experience which integrates fire, water, lasers, fireworks, and an illuminated global show.

The details of the new show have yet to be revealed, but as always we have rumors! Yes, rumors! There are always rumors! Over the past few months, Walt Disney World has been filing new permits for construction around Epcot. The majority are for the new attractions like the Guardians of the Galaxy coaster or Ratatouille in the France pavilion. Buried within those permits were permits for the construction of a new building behind the Japan pavilion along with the addition of electrical both around the World Showcase lagoon and to the islands within the lagoon. It’s believed these permits are for the addition of firework mortars on the islands and the housing of drones behind the Japan pavilion.

Drones being used for nighttime show at Disney Springs. Could they be used on the replacement for Illuminations

Drones? Did he say Drones?! Yes, drones! After the success of the nighttime drone show Disney tested last Christmas at Disney Springs, it is rumored that drones will be included in the new Epcot show. The drones could be used for a variety of reasons, but more than likely they will be used to create images in the sky. Maybe Disney characters? Who knows but hopefully they include Figment!

We have a short amount of time remaining to enjoy Illuminations. It will be an exciting and sad day when we have to say goodbye to this classic show. If the updated Illuminations show is anything like the recently updated Once Upon a Time (formerly, Wishes) at the Magic Kingdom, we are in for a magical treat!
