Happy Birthday to you, Mickey! Can you believe it’s been 90 years!? Boy, time sure does fly. Mickey Mouse became a household name on November 18,1928 in his first feature Steamboat Willie. The animated short was the first to be synced to music and sound effects. From there the rest is history! Despite all of his fame and success a, as we discussed in our Mickey Mouse Runaway Railway article, he is only just getting his first ride, but that doesn’t mean Mickey hasn’t had a great presence throughout Walt Disney World over the years. In honor of Mickey’s 90th Birthday we’re looking back at our “Mickey Favorites” over the years! Where shall we begin?

The Parades

It’s rare for a Walt Disney World parade not to include Mickey as he is usually the headliner, from the holiday parades to nighttime parades and everything in between. There was that one time Epcot had the Tapestry of Nations parade around the World Showcase for the millennium. Where was Mickey? Perhaps more telling, where is the parade now? Exactly – no Mickey, no chance of long term success, it’s just Disney facts!

Our favorite Walt Disney World parade has to be SpectroMagic. Oh how we miss you! A nighttime parade that we could watch over and over again, sometimes twice in a single night. We can still hear Jiminy Cricket’s voice announcing the parade is coming…then you would hear horns, and music, followed by vibrant lights. Who’s the leader of the parade? Mickey of course! Rumor has it that Walt Disney World will be bringing a new nighttime parade back to the Magic Kingdom the 50th anniversary. We can think of it as a belated present for Mickey’s 90th Birthday.

Castle Show at Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party

The Shows

Mickey Mouse is the heartbeat of just about all of the parks performances, from the castle extravaganzas, to rope the drop spectacular, and the nighttime show magic, more often than not you’ll see Mickey joining the show. We are partial to the castle shows, especially the Christmas show that is part of Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. Our favorite though is easily Fantasmic! Over at Hollywood Studios. It’s a DVC Duo must do on every trip. The show brings you through Mickey’s dreams which quickly turn to nightmares and has spectacular set pieces, water effects, and maybe a surprise or two! Though for those Disneyphiles out there, we have to admit, we are little worried about the future of you know what. So as not to ruin the Disney Magic for those who haven’t yet experienced Fantasmic!, we won’t spell it out but we’re sweating bullets that she may be gone for good!

Recently, the Fantasmic show at Disneyland was updated to Fantasmic 2.0. We haven’t heard any news yet, but hopefully we’ll get a similar update on the Hollywood Studios Show.  Maybe for the 50th anniversary? Let’s all make it happen!

Passholder Insights: The show holds around 8,000 people and there really isn’t a bad view. If you’re looking for front and center seats you may want to look at a Fantasmic! Dinner Package. They block-off the center section for the package. We usually don’t do the dinner package and try to arrive around 30 to 40 minutes before and usually end up with good seats. I will say, this is one show where you don’t want to play chicken with seats. It fills up and with bleacher-style seating, you are at the mercy of your neighbor if you are able to squeeze in if you get there lat.

The Meet and Greets

Whether it’s your first time or your 100th time, you have to say hi to Mickey! The question is always which outfit should do you want to high five Mickey in? All of them, Nate! Well, you can definitely do that. The DVC Duo favorite is rare one, it’s Mickey in his Tuxedo. Say it with us, formal yet adorable! Like most of us, Mickey only breaks out the fanciest of clothes for the special occasions, like the holidays! We cover the happenstance of our encounter in our resort holiday guide.

Other great Mickey outfits to see are Safari Mickey and Magician Mickey, which you can see at the Animal Kingdom in the Tusker House Character Dining and the Magic Kingdom in the Town Square Theater respectively. If you’re looking for the traditional Mickey, head to Epcot’s Future World for the character spot, where you’ll meet Mickey and the rest of Fab Five! Whichever Mickey you choose to see, let’s all say Happy Birthday as it’s Mickey’s 90th Birthday!

Even at 90 he is still looking great! In honor of Mickey’s 90th Birthday, what is your favorite Mickey memory? Let us know below or on our Facebook Page!
